In touring through the small towns and rural areas of the state, sometimes travelers will come across an unexpected treasure. One such surprise is Shangri La Gardens, the beautiful secret of Orange, Texas that will rekindle your sense of wonder. This impressive award-winning expanse of 252 acres of wooded uplands and cypress swamps is a natural oasis for viewing botanicals and wildlife.
While Shangri La is inspiring year-round, the best time to visit may be spring, when the many varieties of azaleas are in full glory. The attraction offers 11 gardens of different themes and a Victorian greenhouse, as well as an exhibit hall and discovery center. Aside from nature walks, visitors can take a boat ride that will generate “wow” moments as birds such as Great Egrets are spotted.
In addition to the gardens, Orange has other attractions such as the Heritage House, a gorgeous historic abode furnished in the turn of the 20th century style. It is open for viewing on Tuesday through Friday.
