The Woodlands Memorial Day Celebration

Kerrville Folk Music Festival

Many of us who grew up in the 60s fell in love with the sound of folk music, and that love affair continues to this day. Groups like Peter, Paul and Mary masterfully combined poignant lyrics with musicality, producing amazing songs that have lingered in our consciousness all these years.

Campers will have the opportunity to hear today’s folk music at the Kerrville Folk Festival on May 23 through June 9. During this 18-day period, more than 100 singers and their bands will descend on Quiet Valley Ranch for a glorious round of performances, competitions and workshops. Are you pining for some good polka music? You can enjoy this, along with waltzes and country music at Maifest, one of the oldest German festivals in the state. On May 3 through 5, Brenham will host this gala event that will involve parades, food and pageants, as well as crafts and exhibits.

Fireman’s Park will be the location of a German Village, a highlight of the festivity that will tell the story of the German pioneers who settled in the area, ultimately becoming German Texans. Visitors can watch various demonstrations here, including how to wash clothes with lye soap. Also, vendors will be selling German imports, along with products from Central and Eastern Europe.

Texas Music and Crawfish Festival

In the coming days Southeast Texas will be a good place to visit, as the area will be the scene of two celebrations that are sure to give visitors a Texas good time. On April 26 through 28, Old Town Spring will host the Texas Music and Crawfish Festival, a family event that will include live entertainment and children’s activities, as well as arts and crafts vendors. Are you going to Scarborough Faire? Head over to Waxahachie for the Scarborough Renaissance Festival, which will transport you to merry ol’ England in the year 1533 when King Henry VIII reigned. Once you step foot at this event you will exit 21st century America and enter the entrancing world of 16th century Britain, replete with knights, jousters and cozy pubs.

During the faire, a field of buildings will be turned into a magical English village with “residents” played by a costumed performing group of actors. Entertainment will include Celtic music, storytelling and a host of stage acts. Each weekend will feature a different theme, such as Highland Games Weekend or Legends of the Sea Weekend, so you may want to camp in the area for a while and attend this wonderful event several times. Texas Attractions: San Angelo

Lying in the center of West Texas ranching country is San Angelo, a bustling metro area that offers visitors a delightful mix of historic attractions, arts and culture. While touring the city’s sights would keep campers busy for days, perhaps some of the most unusual and fascinating attractions in the area are a half hour to an hour’s drive away.

Many people are unaware that hermitages are still in existence, but the nearby town of Christoval is home to such a community of men who have dedicated their lives to prayer and solitude. Mt. Carmel Hermitage is a colony that adheres to the Carmelite rule of living in separate dwelling places around a central chapel. Visitors can view the hermitage from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or from 1 to 4 p.m. daily.

Another unique spot is Paint Rock, an area 40 miles east of San Angelo that contains more than 1,000 limestone pictographs, some of which are hundreds of years old. The attraction is open for tours by appointment only.

Polka and Sausage Fest

RVers who love experiencing the culture of different ethnicities will enjoy going down to South Texas in Halletsville this weekend, where the German and Czech heritage of the area will be vibrantly showcased.
